Sandra's Challenge...

My friend Sandra at Canyon Wren Cottage put out a challenge to me and other bloggers who frequent her site to design a teen's room using online sources with a budget of $1,200.
-
Since I have been wanting to revamp my older son's room I took this challenge as a jumpstart to get me going. In our case, the revamp is more of an attempt to get some order back in his room, as well as just to free up some floor space. It's pretty cramped in there with all his stuff. So as such, most of the furniture he has (bunk beds, 4 drawer chest, tv stand, and computer desk...last two of which he bought himself) will be reused. I'd like to paint the entertainment center and desk in a barn red if he'll let me. And the walls would get a new coat of paint in a camel color. Actually, the chip you see below is Sherwin William's "Baguette" and I think that would work.

Below is Daniel's bedroom floor plan, drawn to scale, using my BH&G Design Software that my sister Dana so generously bought me. Heeee....THIS makes these kinds of challenges fun.

-
The BIG CHANGE in Daniel's room would be the conversion of half his closet (stretching the width of one wall between 2 sets of double doors) into a desk/computer area. This would be accomplished by taking the double doors off one side of his closet space, putting a partition between the two areas inside this space and reworking the remaining closet area...no problem. I can do this.
-
While I'd like to paint some of his furniture barn red, I think I'd just keep his pine bunks and his chest in the wood color. They are both in good shape and the wood on the chest is actually pretty nice. Black would be used for accents...mostly in picture frames (existing), shelving (new), and his desk chair (existing). Daniel has a couple of large Halo posters that I'd put in black frames to go over his chest and tv stand and he has some award certificates I've recently framed that I'd display on a couple of shelves as well as around his entertainment center.
-
Floors. This would be the big splurge. I'd replace his carpet wtih wood-look vinyl planks. On top of the floor I'd place a solid 5 x 8 rug like the one you see below:

-

Bedding would be simple, solid and light in a camel color that coordinated with the wall color, with red used just in his pillows for punch. No extra pillows here folks...we are trying to MINIMIZE clutter! (Comforter from overstock/sheets and pillow cases from WalMart.) A couple of floating shelves from Lowe's would be hung between his window and his desk area.

A bamboo shade would be hung in his window. (Or I'd find some light-blocking roman shades...maybe even in a black or red. He's probably prefer black.)

And there you have it folks. Below photos give you an idea what this would look like, although my software limits me a bit in furniture/color/accessory choices, but you get the jist of it, especially concerning the closet to desk area conversion. Now let's see if I actually DO THIS. I showed these pictures to Daniel and he has given me his blessing to go for it. Maybe by his 18th birthday he'll get a fresh room??? Poor kid...his mama needs to get to work...

Thanks Sandra, at least you got me thinking. :-)

You overachiever, you. I knew you'd do up a virtual to show how the room will look. And I think you came in WAY under the budget. Good job! Now if Daniel will just allow you to do it in real life, huh?

I absolutely LOVE how you're planning to rework the closet to make room for a computer desk. Awesome.
