Can you tell...

I like...

To make...

...fondant bows.

Okay, well, I think I finally have a demo on how to make a fondant bow that is at least somewhat presentable. Helped that I figured out how to keep my face out of the picture. :-)

As you'll see, these bows are really very simple to do.
-
So there.
-
To reiterate; in case you can't understand my speech:
-
1) Use Tylose powder (about 1/2 teaspoon) kneaded into the fondant. I really don't measure...a little more or little less won't hurt. You can find Tylose powder online if you can't find it locally. Try globalsugarart.com or cakedeco.com. Or google "tylose". :-)
-
2) Use cornstarch on your mat to keep the fondant from sticking (not too much though; especially if working with darker colored fondants as sometimes it will stain the fondant.)
-3) The reason I use a smaller dowel for the center part of the bow is because I want a tighter diameter to stick my loops into...just make sure you do leave enough room so that the loops do fit inside. I tend to make a couple of center parts just in case one doesn't fit quite right. And to be honest, I don't know that I always used a smaller dowel. I think I change things up just to break up the monotony! ;-)
-4) I do know this: the thinner the thickness of the fondant, the more realistic your bow is going to look. Gumpaste is great in that it's elastic enough that you can roll it really thin without it breaking as you try to put it together. I don't use it much just because I don't keep it on hand, but it's generally easier to work with in my opinion.

5) Have fun with it. My style of pleating has evolved to this...I noticed as I looked back at all my bows they are all a little different. So your pleating doesn't have to be exactly like mine. Also, bows come in all sizes so play with different sizes. As I told you, my favorite size bow is made of loops that are 3" x 6" rectangles, but you can certainly do any size you want!

6) Most of all, have FUN!

Thank you!You are SO talented! I can't wait to try making some bows. I've got to get some tylose powder first though.
Beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.... How do you make the bows that have a trim of a different color??
I always love the cakes you make that have bows. Love. Them. :-)
Thank you! As always, you have such beautiful cakes. And I LOVE this style of bow versus the "loopy" bows that seem to be popular right now. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your talent with us!
