I like to decorate cakes. Basically. All said and done...
-
I do it because it is a creative outlet and I need a creative outlet because I was born with an artistic bent...a need to express myself with color and line and space and form...
-
But I'm not so good at painting. And even with a degree in interior design I don't make decisions quickly and confidently...especially when it comes to spending other people's money...I find that quite intimidating...so I'm not so good at interior design either...
-
And so I like cakes. Cake decorating, that is...
-
It's cheap and it's unintimidating. And it satisfies my creative side.
-
If my art doesn't turn out so well, no worry. It'll be eaten anyway. And I can forget. Try, try again...
-
If it does turn out then I'm happy as a lark. I can take a photo of the cake and remember forever....and look at that photo a zillion times....and show people that photo a zillion times....living on past cake accomplishments for as long as I possibly can until I've finally created another that I am happy with...
-
But the other side of cake decorating...
-
The other side is that I don't always create cakes *I* choose to create and am therefore a little, shall I say, UNinspired...
-
BORED, actually...because the design is not of my choosing.
-
Take Spiderman here...

It's not that I don't like Spiderman. I love Spiderman. I've gone to every movie on the big screen actually. Even secretly despaired when I had to leave the 3rd movie before it was over because my mother-in-law decided the movie was too violent for little Ewin, 4-year-old son of my sister-in-law Carole, who went to watch the movie with us.
-
I wanted to yell "C'mon, PLEASE let us staaaaaay Jo Jooooo! It will not scar little Ewin for life! He'll be okay. I'll sleep with him tonight if he get's scared. REALLY!"
-
But no. I am a good daughter-in-law. I am a good aunt.
-
I was strong.
-I hid my disappointment.
-
I followed Jo Jo and little Ewin out the theatre door. (though kicking and screaming in my mind)
-
But back to the point!
-
EVEN THOUGH I LOVE SPIDERMAN I DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE DOING SPIDERMAN CAKES.
-
This is the OTHER SIDE OF CAKE DECORATING...sometimes I decorate cakes not so much for the creative outlet as for the happiness it will give that someone who happens to love Spiderman cakes.
-
Sometimes it's Spiderman; sometimes it's camo for the third year in a row... :-/
-
Nope. Don't particularly like doing camo cakes either...
-
In fact, I prefer all things girlie...flowers and swirls and pink and purple and bows and did I say flowers??? And anything graphic...polka dots and diamonds and stripes. Get the picture?
-
But sometimes I have to put my preferences aside.
-
And that is okay...
-
If it makes the recipient of the cake smile.
-
So here is celebrating Spiderman and camo and all designs uninspired...
-
It's the other side of cake decorating. :-)

First of all, you CAN paint well and you decorate circles around just about anyone. You also write well. You're just plain, sickeningly, perfectly artistically talented! And cute, too! If you weren't so darn NICE, I'd probably hate ya! ;-) The fact that you spend all that time on cakes that bore you but bring delight to others is exactly what I mean. You are a great soul, Lisa!

Thank you Amber. I'm blushing.
Huge compliment from someone I admire so for her own creativity and intelligence and wisdom beyond her years!
